F is for… Field Notes

AtoZ2019F

We couldn’t have a series about pocket notebooks without including a post on Field Notes. Field Notes are the classic memo pocket notebook (made in the US). The standard Field Notes set is made up of three graph-ruled notebooks with a “kraft” brown cover.

Field Notes First Print

However, Field Notes have printed many variations on their original classic and experimented with different series and covers as well as their limited edition notebooks (Quarterly Editions).

Product Details:

Most Field Notes Notebooks follow the same basic product details with the cover and paper variations depending on the edition.

  • Field Notes: Cherry Wood – One of my favourites in my collection of Field Notes this cover is a cherry wood veneer, bound to brown kraft paper. This means that each cover is unique. I love how this one feels – you can feel the grain of the wood and it feels warm.
  • Field Notes: Expedition – this notebook has a hi-visibility “Antarctic Survey Orange” front cover and “Polar Night Black” back cover, with a subtle varnish effect featuring a topographic map of Antarctica. The whole book is printed on Yupo Synthetic paper, which is a water and tear-proof paper.
  • Field Notes: Coastal: East – these notebooks are part of the Field Notes Spring Limited Edition. Two sets of Coastal were produced by Field Notes: East and West Coast options. Celebrating the left and right edges of the USA, each Coastal pack displays a coastline across the three notebooks in the pack.  I received the Coastal East Pack which shows the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida.
  • Field Notes: Ten Year Anniversary Pack – This pack contains three different notebooks. A reproduction of Aaron Draplin’s first use of the name and logo in 2002; the first field notes print run from 2005 and the field notes brand’s first test run from 2007.
  • Field Notes: County Fair – These were the first pack of Field Notes that I ever got. The County Fair Series which celebrated the 50 U.S. states (plus Washington D.C.). It was originally a Quarterly Edition before it came part of their regular offering. You can choose from any of the states.

  1. Nice compilation of notebooks that are available. I didn’t know there was such a variety, though I am always attracted to them in art, business and book stores. I just don’t know what I want to write in them and they can be expensive! Someday maybe I will compile some writing I’ve done in one.

    1. I always find myself out and about, and I find just writing down some thoughts or todo list etc much more relaxing (and productive) which is what I use the majority of by notebooks for. Prices can really vary but there are some great simple options.
One of our previous challenges our theme was everyday uses for any notebooks if you are ever stuck for ideas 🙂

  2. I had no idea there were so many different kinds. I have notebooks lying all over my house. I never know when I am going to need to joy something down.

I am at Transformed Nonconformist. I usually write humor pieces, but I am getting serious this month. I’m writing about people who have deeply impacted my life.

    1. Hi Brett, thanks for dropping by. I hope you are enjoying the a to z challenge – you can never have too many notebooks – you never know when you might need them.

  3. I think I got a Field Notes that was designed for and sold by The Sketchbook Project.
It’s a blank book. The problem is it’s really hard to scan, because of the tight binding.

    I’m enjoying your posts!

  4. Hi Anne, Great project. I am not much of a sketcher/artist personally – but I can certainly see the attraction 🙂 Thanks for dropping by – I’m glad you are enjoying the posts.
